A CLOSER LOOK AT THE SPECIES

Every detail
has a story.

Appearance and identificationYellow and ochre markings, with two distinctive dark bands on the underside of the shell.

Hermann’s tortoise is a small to medium-sized tortoise native to southern Europe. Its shell is brown and black with yellow and ochre markings, which can become paler or more yellow with age. The underside is yellow and ochre with two brown-black bands running along it. The head is yellowish or olive green, with scattered dark brown patches. The legs and tail are mostly brown or olive green. Males have a somewhat larger tail than females.

Growth and lifespanSlow growth and a long life story.

Hermann’s tortoises can live for many decades, with some reaching 70–100 years, and may grow to around 20 cm. Size and longevity vary with the individual, sex, subspecies and care. Efficient energy use and very slow growth are thought to contribute to their long lives.

Activity and temperatureIts activity follows the temperature of its surroundings.

Tortoises depend on external heat. Their activity decreases considerably when the temperature outdoors or indoors falls below their needs. This introductory guide gives daytime ambient temperatures of 24–26 °C and night-time temperatures of 18–24 °C. These are general reference ranges, not a complete heating plan: provide a suitable temperature gradient, a basking area and cooler shelter, with species-appropriate advice from a reptile veterinarian.
